Erasmus+ for Everyone: 5 Myths Debunked

The most common misconceptions that stop young people from applying — and the reality behind each one.

📅 May 2024⏱️ 5 min read✍️ CLAVE Youth 2 Can Act

Every year we talk to young people who want to do Erasmus+ but hold back because they believe something that simply isn't true. Here are the 5 most common myths — and why none of them should stop you.

1MYTH: "Erasmus+ is only for university students"

✅ REALITY: Erasmus+ is for ALL young people aged 18–30

The university exchange strand is just ONE part of Erasmus+. The KA152 youth exchange programme, the European Solidarity Corps volunteering, and the KA153 youth worker mobility are all open to young people regardless of their educational background. Working, unemployed, NEET, vocational training students, recent school leavers — all are equally welcome.

2MYTH: "You need to speak perfect English"

✅ REALITY: Basic conversational English is enough — and you'll improve during the programme

Non-formal education uses activity-based methods where language is a tool, not a barrier. Communication happens through drawing, movement, music, visuals and action — not just words. Many participants arrive with basic English and leave fluent. CLAVE facilitators are bilingual and support Spanish speakers throughout.

3MYTH: "It costs a lot of money"

✅ REALITY: The cost to participants is €0

Travel, accommodation, food, insurance, local transport and cultural activities are all covered by the Erasmus+ EU grant. You pay nothing. Participants with fewer economic resources even receive special supplementary grants. The only thing you need to bring is motivation and an open mind.

4MYTH: "I'm not 'international' enough — I've never travelled"

✅ REALITY: Never having been abroad is an advantage in some programmes

Erasmus+ explicitly prioritises young people with fewer opportunities — including those who have never had the chance to travel internationally. Your first experience abroad is exactly what these programmes are designed for. CLAVE's pre-departure preparation is specifically designed to support first-timers.

5MYTH: "The Erasmus+ certificate doesn't count for anything in the real world"

✅ REALITY: Employers and universities across Europe recognise Youthpass

The Youthpass is issued by the European Commission and documents real competencies across the EU's 8 Key Competencies framework. A 2022 European Commission study found that 80% of Erasmus+ youth programme alumni report a positive impact on their employability. Many hiring managers across Europe are familiar with Youthpass and value the intercultural competencies it represents.
